Skin Cancer Screening

Skin Cancer Screening

Learning that you have skin cancer can be scary. But, it is important to know that there are different types of skin cancer, and most can be permanently cured. Early diagnosis and treatment is the best remedy for all types of skin cancer.

So early detection is critical!

A Skin Cancer Screening is a visual exam of the skin during which Dr. Gross or one of his associates checks the skin for moles, birthmarks, or other marks that are unusual in color, size, shape, or texture. By visually inspecting the marks and growths on your body, Dr. Gross or one of his associates can determine if any of them are suspicious for skin cancer. The most common types of skin cancer are basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, and usually are not life-threatening.

Once the skin is examined, a biopsy may be required to determine a definitive diagnosis. If the pathology shows skin cancer, an individualized plan for treatment can be developed. Dr. Gross or one of his associates will work with you every step of the way – from screening – to planning – to treatment!

Some Treatment of Precancerous Lesions can include:

  • Cryotherapy/Freezing: Used to destroy precancerous lesions/very early skin cancers by freezing them with liquid nitrogen (cryosurgery)
  • Surgical Removal: In this procedure, the lesion is cut out using local anesthesia to numb the area
  • Mohs Surgery: A surgical method (Mohs Micrographic Surgery) to treat certain skin cancers, resulting in minimal tissue removal and the highest cure rate.
  • Curettage and Electrodesiccation: A method that involves scraping coupled with electrocautery using local anesthesia to numb the site
  • Radiation Therapy: This option uses beams of intense energy to kill the cancer cells
  • Topical Chemotherapy/Immunotherapy: This method uses a cream that preferentially kills off the cancerous cells or one that enhances your body’s immune system to fight skin cancer.

If you have a growth that you are concerned about or if a new skin growth appears on your body that is irregular in size or color, get it checked by a Dermatologist right away.

Remember, early detection is crucial!
